The Essington School Darwin
The Essington School Darwin is located in Nightcliff which is approximately
ten kilometres from Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia.
It is a co-educational, non-denominational, independent school. It
originated in the early 1980s as a Montessori kindergarten and has
grown in recent years to cover all elementary grades and secondary
classes to Year 10.
The Essington School Darwin is structured in four phases: Pre-school
- this program caters for children in Kindergarten (ages 2½-three)
and Pre-school (ages three to five); Early Learning Unit (Transition
to Year 2), Junior School (Years 3 to 5) and Middle School (Secondary
- Years 6 to 10). The The Essington School Darwin has a multi-age
class structure with a low student-teacher ratio. The Essington
School's vision takes a holistic approach to education that ensures
an effective and challenging educational program. The educational
program is based on the individual needs of the child with the emphasis
being placed on the recognition of individual differences. The The
Essington School Darwin provides a positive, nurturing environment
in which children are encouraged to pursue their potential. The
school provides secondary classes to Year 10 and is planning for
senior secondary classes. International education is becoming a
major focus of the school as it moves into the senior school arena.
The school is forming close links with the Northern Territory University.
Secondary students study science in the University's science laboratories
and use other specialist technology facilities. The The Essington
School Darwin also has a classroom music program and three junior
choirs. The school is forming a sister school program with schools
within Australia and overseas including The Prince Royal's College,
Chiang Mai, Thailand, and the Tamagawa University and School, Tokyo.
