of Guangzhou
The American International School of Guangzhou (AISG) is an independent,
coeducational day school which offers an educational program from
pre-school through grade 12. The school was founded in 1981. The
180-day academic year comprises two semesters from August 25 to
December 19 and from January 5 to June 16.

American International School of Guangzhou is governed by a seven-member
Board of Governors. Four are elected from members of AISG Parents'
Association. Membership in the latter is automatically conferred
on the parents or guardians of children enrolled in the school.
Three members are appointed: one by the US Consul, one by the other
Consuls in Guangzhou and one by the Corporate Council.
An international curriculum is offered in self-contained classrooms
through grade 5, and in a departmentalized middle and high school
setting for grades 6-12. The medium of instruction is English. AISG
is authorized by the International Baccalaureate to present the
Middle Years Program in grades 6-10. It is currently introducing
the Primary Years Program in the lower grades and the Diploma Programme
in grades 11 and 12. Advanced Placement courses and exams are offered
to students in the high school. Children with limited English language
proficiency can seek enrollment. The school is accredited by the
Western Association of Schools Colleges.
American International School of Guangzhou has 56 full-time and
three part-time faculty members, 20 of whom are American. Enrollment
at the end of the 2002-2003 school year was 545.
American International School of Guangzhou is located on a new,
purpose-built campus on Ersha Island in the Pearl River near Guangzhou's
new diplomatic and commercial district. The school shares the island
with the new Guangdong Art Museum, Xinhai Concert Hall and housing
estates occupied by the international commcial community. The new
school facility has a capacity for six hundred students. It includes
a gymnasium, two computer labs, two science labs, a large library,
an art room, a music room, a playing field and thirty classrooms.
