The British Embassy Study Group was founded in 1959 to provide a primary
school education for the staff of the Embassy in Ankara. Since that
time the school has grown and changed, so that there are pupils from
35 nationalities in enlarged and modernised buildings. Emphasis is
placed on individual encouragement, achievement and mutual respect.
The British Embassy Study Group is a private, non-profit making
school, which serves the diplomatic and business community. It is
governed by a Board of Governors with a Chairman appointed by the
British Ambassador.
A British-style education is offered through the medium of the
English National Curriculum at the British Embassy Study Group,
with English as the medium of instruction. Consideration is given
to the setting in Turkey, both within the mainstream subjects and
through the teaching of basic Turkish language and culture. The
SAT tests are given to all age groups from Year 2, and the Study
Group consistently achieves performance within the top 3% of schools
in the United Kingdom.
Children are welcome from age 3 to 11, with the youngest children
attending for half a day. Those children who are not native speakers
are given interviews, with an additional English test for entry
to Years 3 to 6. Application should be made as early as possible.
Many staff have already taught in overseas schools and all are aware
of the needs of an international community. Both the Literacy and
Numeracy strategies have recently been introduced. The schools
approach to the humanities and physical education includes a range
of residential and day trips, which are organized throughout Key
Stage 2. The country provides many unique resources.
The British Embassy Study Group has extensive grounds, which include
a large area of natural woodland and an all-weather pitch. Internal
facilities include a large library, art and technology rooms and
a gymnasium.
A full programme of after-school clubs is provided at the British
Embassy Study Group, staffed by both teachers and parents. The school
day is from 08:40 until 15:00, with the Nursery finishing at 11:45.
The school year is from the end of August until the end of June,
with holidays for Christmas and Easter, and at half terms.
