Harare
International School, a private, non-profit, college preparatory school,
was founded in 1992 to serve the international community of Harare.
Housed on a 21-acre campus in the city's northern suburb of Mount
Pleasant, HIS boasts a state-of-the-art campus comprised of 13 buildings
housing 36 classrooms, among them: three computer labs, four science
labs, two music rooms, two art rooms, and a library with a technology-based
reference center. There is a new physical education complex containing
a regulation-sized gymnasium, a dance studio, weight room, and shower/changing
facilities. A Performing Arts Centre, completed in July 2002, houses
a 750-seat theatre, drama and music classrooms and practice areas.
The school, by mission and philosophy, aims to provide an English-based
education from Pre-K through Grade 12. While the ethos and curricular
base of the school are American in concept and intent, it is the school’s
goal to incorporate the best practices, methods, and materials from
educational systems around the world. The Advanced Placement International
Diploma program for high school will be offered for the final year
for students seeking admission to those universities and countries
that recognize the APID and for purposes of advanced standing at American
universities. The International Baccalaureate Diploma program began
in August 2004 in grade 11 so as to serve best the international student
body. ESL is offered for those students in need of supplementary English
lessons and the school is in the process of extending its special
needs services to the secondary school. French is offered starting
in Grade 2 and Spanish from Grade 5. There is also the additional
option of studying other languages through the Native Language Program.
HIS offers a full range of after-school activities including sports,
intra-murals, instrumental and vocal programs, art, drama, student
government, yearbook, and computers. The school competes with and
co-operates among local schools in competitive sports, fine arts,
and Knowledge Bowl contests. International sports matches have begun
with sister schools in the Southern African region. All students in
Grades 4-12 participate in an annual week-long Explore Zimbabwe program
to foster an appreciation of the beauty and culture of our host country.
The school year runs from mid August through early June with breaks
at Christmas and Easter, following a typical Northern Hemisphere calendar.
Enrollment forms should be obtained and submitted, along with a US$500
Admissions Fee, prior to arrival in country, if possible, to ensure
placement. All secondary students sit assessments once on-site so
as to determine reading and math levels and to assure proper placement.
The school is accredited by both the New England Association of Schools
and Colleges and CIS.
