The Alice Smith School has provided a British-style education in Kuala
Lumpur since its foundation in 1946. The school is open to students
of all nationalities provided they can access the curriculum in the
medium of English. "The School exists to provide the highest
standards of British Education in an international context" is
the mission statement. The English National Curriculum, adapted to
the schools local circumstances, forms the basis of the academic
programme in the Infant, Junior and early Secondary School years,
while a combination of home based GCSE and IGCSE courses are offered
in Year 10 and 11. EdExcel (London) A-levels are offered in Year 12
and 13. In the past students have entered a wide range of leading
independent schools around the world (but mainly in the UK) at the
age of 11 or 13, but the vast majority now stay with the school to
complete their education until their families leave.
The Alice Smith School is now located on two sites following the
opening of a new campus to the south of the city in September 1997.
At Jalan Bellamy, the city centre campus offers an environment refurbished
to meet the needs of infants and early juniors (Reception to Year
6). At the new campus at Equine Park, (15 minutes from the Commonwealth
Games facilities and close to the Multimedia Super Corridor) five
hundred seniors have access to Olympic standard sports facilities,
seven science laboratories, two ICT suites and an intranet across
the school, design centre, performing arts suite, dance studio,
drama studio, theatre and library.
The Jalan Bellamy site is located near the royal palace, while
Equine Park is situated in one of the fastest growing areas of the
region between Kuala Lumpur and the government's new super city
of Putra Jaya, which will become the location of all federal government
departments in the next few years.
The Alice Smith School administers a wider variety of sporting
and cultural extra-curricular activities and is particularly committed
to a broad range of residential expeditions and trips for all students
aged ten and above. The Alice Smith School commenced the Duke of
Edinburgh Award Scheme in 1998-9, and offers the programme in Years
11, 12 and 13.
