It is always a concern for individuals and families who move abroad, to one or more countries whether their pension will be transferred with them. The bad news is that this is not automatic. Each country has its own rules for transferring pensions and you need to do the ground work to find out how much of the pension that you are working for is going to be transferable to another country. Conversely, you also want to be sure that the contributions that you are obliged to make while working abroad will be easily transferrable to you once you decide to leave the country, retire, and return home and withdraw your pension at home. One problem is that the bureaucracy is so complicated and buried under so much legal jargon that you have to employ the help of an expert from that country, and there is still no guarantee that they will be able to help you with your particular type of problem. The best thing you can do is rely on the recommendations from friends and colleagues who are in a similar situation, and are able to recommend somebody to you. |
