Amman Baccalaureate School Jordan. The ABS is an independent, co-educational,
day school providing a bilingual education aimed at meeting the
highest international standards whilst remaining firmly rooted in
the Arab heritage. It is owned by the Hashemite Society for Education,
a registered non-profit charity. It consists of Kindergarten, Junior
School (1-5), Middle Years School (6-10) and IB Diploma College
(11-12), each with its own head.
While the curriculum is bilingual (Arab and English) across KG-grade
8, provision is available for students to study in English in grades
9-12. The school is authorized to offer the MYP (grades 6-10), and
IB Diploma (grades 11-12) programmes of the IBO.
The mainly graduate staff is mixed Jordanian (85%) and UK/USA (15%).
The student body is mainly Jordanian, though there are around 150
students of some 20 other nationalities. Many students stay at ABS
for the whole of their school careers. Virtually all graduates proceed
to higher education, mainly in the US, UK, Canada or Jordan.
The two-semester school year runs from early September to late June,
with a mid-year break December/January. The school day (Sunday to
Thursday), of seven x 45 minutes (Junior School) or seven x 50 minutes
(Middle Years School and Diploma College) periods begins at 08:00.
A wide range of activities and community service opportunities are
available to students.
The purpose-built campus on the outskirts of Amman includes eight
science laboratories, four computing laboratories, a technology
laboratory, a multi-media workshop, sports complex, specialist rooms
for art, ceramics and geography, cafeteria, a multi-purpose hall,
a 400-seat professional theatre, AV facilities, media centres, track
and field/stadium, three tennis courts and multi-purpose outside
area (for basketball, handball or volleyball).
The school is academically selective and admission is by entrance
test and interview. There is limited scholarship/bursary programme.
ABS is accredited by the Council of International Schools and the
New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
