More information about the School

HLYIS was founded in 1983 to cater for students from 3-13 years old from both the expatriate and local communities of the Hong Lok Yuen development and neighbouring areas. The school lies in rural surroundings and is convenient to the New Territories, China and central Hong Kong.

The school is a community school with a wide range of after-school extracurricular activities provided by teachers, parents and private organizations.

Parents play a large part in the running of the school and help voluntarily in every-day activities.

The medium of instruction is English with all children learning Putonghua (Mandarin) as a second language. For Chinese speakers, a more intensive programme of Chinese Studies is offered.

The curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum adapted to the school's international context. Teaching and learning focuses on a child-centred, investigational approach with an emphasis on literacy and numeracy. The curriculum is enriched with a structured programme of field trips and camps, including a student exchange trip to China each year.

The school is committed to high standards of education with a multi-cultural teaching staff who are well-qualified with international experience. Most come from the UK, New Zealand, Canada, Australia and China.

There are specialist staff for PE, music, the Educational Support Programme and Chinese Studies. Supplementary teaching in English as an Additional Language is provided for children who require support. Classes are small, with 24 as a maximum. The school is well resourced and has a large playing field, basketball courts, science room, library, kitchen, computer room, all classrooms with interactive whiteboards, and a well-equipped Kindergarten.
