Founded in 1951, Jakarta International School is a co-educational
private school, Grades Prep-Kindergarten to Grade 12, with students
from 60 countries. JIS is governed by 11 Board members.
The US-based curriculum is international in scope, and offers a
full IB programme. Examinations given include Interest Inventory,
Aptitude Inventory, IB Diploma, AP, SAT, ACH, ACT, SSAT, PSAT and
TOEFL.
Many of the faculty are Americans. All teachers hold a BA, with
many holding an MA; eight hold either a PhD or EdD.
Twenty-six per cent of the students come from the US and Canada,
22% from Southeast Asia, 14% from Europe, and 38% from other countries.
More than 98% of JIS graduates go on to college or university, approximately
50% in the United States. Graduates from the past two years have
attended major universities in the US, UK, Australia, the Philippines,
Japan and Korea.
The Jakarta International School year began on 13 August 2003 and
ends on 9 June 2004, with a three-week Christmas break, a one-week
first semester break in October, and a one-week second semester
break in April. School hours are from 07:30 to 14:40. Activities
include drama, gymnastics, dance, music, computers, yearbook, photography,
excursions/expeditions, cultural exchanges, MUN and sports programs.
Jakarta International School has four sites totalling 46 acres.
Facilities are mostly air-conditioned and include 206 classrooms,
four libraries (100,000 volumes), four theatres, three cafeterias,
three tennis courts, four gymnasiums, five playing fields, two swimming
pools, 19 science labs, seven computer labs, a fine arts building,
wood shop, auto shop and photo lab.
Jakarta International School does not have the facilities to deal
with children with serious learning disabilities or special education
problems.
