The International School of Latvia is an independent, co-educational
day school offering a multicultural curriculum in English from Toddlers
to grade 12. ISL was founded in 1992 to cater for the international
community but students from the host country are also welcome. The
certified staff are recruited from around the world. There are also
some locally recruited Latvian staff as it is important to recognize
the importance of professional input from the host country.
The classrooms, support services and administrative offices are
in a newly renovated wing of the Bulduri Darzkopibas Tehnikum (Horticultural
School). A new library/media center was built for the 2001 school
year. There are two full computer labs. There is access to an indoor
gymnasium, swimming pool and auditorium, and a fenced playground
with facilities to play basketball and football together with a
variety of play equipment. A range of after school activities is
offered and the school liaises with local organizations to provide
a comprehensive programme including golf, multi-gym, aerobics, bowling,
ice-skating and tennis.
The International School of Latvia follows the International Baccalaureate
Primary Years (age 3-11) and Middle Years (age 11-16) Programmes.
These programmes offer an international curriculum framework and
prepare students for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
in grades 11 and 12 (age 16-18). ISL is an IB World School.
Students from pre-school to grade 5 are in self-contained classrooms
but also attend specialist classes. International School of Latvia
strives to offer individualized learning programmes throughout the
school. With the support of the English as a Second Language Specialist,
teachers are able to address the issue of differentiation of instruction.
International School of Latvia is governed by a Board of Directors
which is elected by the International School Association of Latvia.
The school operates as a non-profit organisation and is accredited
by the European Council of International Schools and the New England
Association of Schools and Colleges.
International School of Latvia is a 20-minute drive from the centre
of Riga in the coastal resort of Jurmala. Transportation is provided
for all students in grades 1-12 for a fee.
