The
International School of Lusaka, established in 1963, is a non-profit,
private co-educational day school. The school was established to provide
an international education to students from the international and
local communities of Zambia. It is owned by the International School
of Lusaka Association whose members are the parents of students enrolled
in the school, and the professional staff. The Association elects
a nine-member Board of Governors and the Board may appoint two additional
members. The International School of Lusaka is authorized by the Zambian
Ministry of Education.
In the Primary School there is an international curriculum for nursery
through year 6. The Secondary School, Forms 1-6, leads to the IGCSE
in Form 5, and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in
Form 6. In addition the school offers PSAT, SAT, ACH and TOEFL testing.
There are full-time English as a Second Language and Learning Support
programs offered at all levels. The nature of the school permits its
students to follow the curriculum from Nursery through Form 6 while
at the same time enabling them to take advantage of the diversity
of the cultures in the host country and in the international communities
present in Zambia.
The school's experienced faculty is a mixture of Zambian, expatriate
locally hired, and overseas recruited staff representing a total of
14 different nationalities.
The student body is 23% Zambian, 23% Indian and 12% British with 46
nationalities comprising the remaining 42%. ISL offers sports, art,
music, computer and modern language classes. ISL has a 33-acre campus
located in the Longacres area of Lusaka, approximately five minutes
from the city center. There are ten main buildings, which include
63 classrooms, six science labs, two libraries, three computer rooms,
and staff rooms. The new Fine Arts Building houses the Performing
Arts and Creative Arts Departments. Sports facilities include a 400-metre
track, all-purpose courts, playing fields, a wading pool, a 25-meter
swimming pool, and a multi-purpose center.
Admission to the International School of Lusaka is open to students
of any race, nationality, or creed. An admission/placement test is
required for all students seeking admission. The tests are mainly
in the areas of reading, English language and mathematics. Each child
is given an admission test prior to grade placement.
