Ghana International School - Ghana
The Ghana International School was founded in September 1955, when Ghana had yet to achieve full independence and international schools were uncommon. The school’s motto has always been 'Understanding of Each Other,' and the aim is to provide a world-class international education for young people in Accra in a multi-cultural context, for the benefit of both Ghanaians and non-Ghanaians. The school now occupies over 10 acres in the residential area of Cantonments to the northeast of the city centre. The school is a not-for-profit organization registered under Ghanaian law as a company limited by guarantee. Teachers at Ghana International School are recruited locally but come from other nations as well as Ghana. Nations represented on the staff include UK, USA, India, France, Poland, Ukraine, Ethiopia and Nigeria. A teaching assistant is attached to each Infant and Junior class. The Infant and Junior sections use the English National Curriculum, modified to take account of the school’s geographical and historical setting. Students study English, mathematics, science, history, geography, ICT, music, art and physical education. French is added in Class 2. Broadly the same range of subjects is studied in the Secondary section. There is some choice from Form 4 upwards, where additional subjects such as economics are added. Courses are validated through IGCSE examinations at age 16 and GCE Advanced Level at age 18. The school is a centre for SAT I and II tests of the College Board. Ghana International School is a non-sectarian school and welcomes families of all faiths and none. There is no religious instruction or worship. Matters of morality and citizenship are addressed in the 'Values and Ethics' programme throughout the school. A full range of extra-curricular activities is offered, and each Junior and Secondary student is expected to participate in at least one. The Infant and Junior sections at Ghana International School each have an assembly hall, and share a playing field, art and music rooms, a library and a computer room. The Junior section also has a practical room for science. The Secondary section has a computerized library/resource centre with more than 10,000 volumes, a film room, a language laboratory, two computer laboratories, six science laboratories, playing fields, tennis and basketball courts, two art rooms and an assembly hall with a stage. |
