Luanda International School opened in 1996 and occupies a new purpose-built facility south of the city centre. The school has expanded rapidly and now has 250 students. The school is accredited by CIS and by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. LIS is authorized to offer the Primary Years Programme of the International Baccalaureate Organization in Kindergarten through sixth grade. Grades 9 and 10 were added in September 2004 and grades 7-10 began to implement the IB Middle Years Programme. A pre-primary class serves children who are three years old by September 1. Years 12 and 13 are being added from September 2005 and it is anticipated that the IB Diploma will be offered from that time. Portuguese is taught in the primary school and Spanish in the secondary school. Experienced international staff have been recruited from around the world.
