Founded in 1924, The British School of Rio de Janeiro is a non-profit,
independent and co-educational school for children of all nationalities.
While the majority of the pupils are Brazilian, the school retains
its essentially British curriculum, ethos and character.
The British School of Rio de Janeiro aims to provide a broad, balanced
and relevant education to meet the needs of both the international
and local community. Pupils acquire Brazilian and international
qualifications, being prepared to transfer to international or local
schools and enter universities overseas and in Brazil.
The Primary curriculum at The British School of Rio de Janeiro
is based on the English National Curriculum. The secondary school
prepares students for the Cambridge IGCSE and the International
Baccalaureate Diploma. English is the language of teaching and learning
and its use, fluency and accuracy are promoted to the fullest extent.
Practical experiences, both inside and outside the classroom, are
a vital aspect of the curriculum. Throughout the school, day outings,
field trips and residential trips are organized to support learning.
The focus on high academic standards is balanced by a concern to
develop pupils physical, emotional and social needs and to
ensure that they are well prepared for life. The highest value is
placed on good social behaviour and moral standards in which respect
for the individual and the environment are paramount. There is a
strong extra-curricular programme including community service, sports,
performing arts, MUN and a very active Duke of Edinburgh Award programme.
The British School of Rio de Janeiro offers a happy, stimulating
and positive atmosphere within which new children settle in easily.
Classes are small, which permits considerable individual attention
and enables teachers to create a caring and well-disciplined learning
environment. A complete Nursery to Class 11 school is housed on
two separate sites in the South Zone of Rio. An additional school
is being gradually developed in a suburban region of the city. On
all school premises, the highest priority is placed on health, safety
and security.
The academic at The British School of Rio de Janeiro year runs
from February to December. The school day is from to 07:45 to 15:15
within staggered entrance and dismissal time for the different year
groups.
Admissions are open throughout the year for pupils who would benefit
from an academically demanding English language education. Entry
is based on previous school reports together with screening, testing
and/or interview, depending on age.
