The British School of Houston, located in northwest Houston in

The school is a private co-educational day school currently catering
for children aged 3 to 16. It follows the English National Curriculum
for Key Stages 1, 2, 3 and 4 and there are plans to extend into
a full senior programme in the near future. GCSE program will be
followed from year 10 and the first exams are to be taken in 2005.
French is taught to children from the Nursery. The British School
of Houston is a sister school to the British School of Washington,
which opened in 1998.
The British School of Houston is housed in a large modern building
on an extensive campus, and includes three playing fields, two gymnasiums,
dance studio, science, art, music and computer suites and a large
auditorium.

Classroom teachers at British School of Houston are UK-trained
and National Curriculum experienced graduates. Some specialist teachers,
eg French and music, may be locally recruited, as are classroom
assistants. Core textbooks, library books and work schemes are imported
from the UK. The school tests at the end of Key Stages using the
UK Statutory Assessment Tests and all children receive a baseline
assessment upon entry. Children from Year 3 are tested regularly
with other UK standardised tests so the parents may make comparisons
of their child's potential and achievement against national norms.
School inspections are conducted using qualified inspectors from
the UK. There is a mandatory school uniform.
The day-to-day operation of the British School of Houston is managed
by the head teacher, in consultation with the UK-based Executive
Board and the Advisory Board (drawn from the local, international
and parental communities).
The British School of Houston has an open admissions programme
with year-round enrolment, subject to availability of places, and
is non-selective but requires reports from previous schools and
an interview. Children with limited English may only be admitted
to the early years and there is no special needs provision.
