Chartered in 1881, the Convent of the Sacred Heart is a member
of the international network of Sacred Heart schools and the oldest
independent girls' school in New York City. The beautiful facilities
are located in two landmark buildings overlooking Central Park.
The school is dedicated to the holistic development of young women,
and committed to preparing students for the challenges of the modern
world. The Convent of the Sacred Heart headmistress states: 'As
we teach children to read, write, listen, think, imagine and create,
at the Convent of the Sacred Heart we need also to educate them
to their responsibilities as citizens who will create a more just
and compassionate world'. The Lower School provides a strong learning
foundation, and is designed to help students become inquisitive,
original thinkers through intensive personal attention and small-group
study. By the time students reach the Middle School, comprised of
grades 5 through 7, they are ready for more abstract study in the
basic subjects. They continue the study of foreign languages begun
in grade 3, while thoroughly preparing for the academic challenges
of the Upper School, where the curriculum is rigorous. In addition
to demanding college preparatory courses, a wide variety of electives
are offered, many highlighting the unique cultural advantages of
New York City. Advancement Placement courses are offered in English,
history, modern and classical languages, mathematics, sciences,
studio art, and music. Additionally, religion courses are required
of all Sacred Heart students. Co-curricular activities include student
government, Model UN, literary, science, and second language publications,
theatrical productions, mock trial, forensics, women of proud heritage,
handbells, archaeology, chorus, math team, and numerous student-run
clubs, while numerous athletic teams compete with other independent
schools. Students may participate in an exchange program with other
Sacred Heart schools in Europe and the United States. Service activities
are expected of each student, exemplifying the commitment of Sacred
Heart education to social justice, generosity, and the support of
the broader comuninity.
