The English Academy
The English Academy, established in 1993, currently provides British-style education for 900 boys and girls aged 3 years and upward. IGCSE (Cambridge) and GCSE (London) courses were introduced in the 1996/97 academic year and the first external examinations at IGCSE level administered in 1998. AS- Level courses began in 2000/2001. The British system is followed throughout, with the adaptation of the National Curriculum as appropriate. British qualified staff are recruited on overseas contracts and are supported by locally appointed colleagues who teach Arabic Language and Islamic Studies according to the Government syllabus. Particular emphasis is placed on the teaching of Arabic in the first three years, thus providing students with the opportunity to become fully bilingual. The school is well-equipped and has an English and an Arabic library, two computer studies centres, four science laboratories, AV rooms, a multi-purpose hall and separate specialist music and art departments. Individual classrooms have their own book corners, computers and other teaching aids to support learning. Extra-curricular activities include instrumental lessons, numerous clubs, drama and a variety of sports pursued at a friendly and competitive level within KFSAC (Kuwait Foreign Schools Activities Conference). A rounded and interesting personality, an ability to cope with the responsibilities and challenges of life, and an eagerness to expand personal horizons are all characteristics. The English Academy fosters and encourages in its students. The KG Staff assess children applying for a place in Kindergarten. All other children are assessed by the Department Heads through personal interview and on the basis of previous school records. A short test may also be administered. All applicants must have a reasonable command of English, the principal language of instruction. Merit scholarships are available for Year 10 and Year 11. The English Academy has been awarded both CIS and MSA accredited status. |
