The American Community Schools of Athens Inc is a private, non-profit
organization offering an educational program for English-speaking
students from Junior Kindergarten to 12th grade. The governing body
is an eight-member Board of Education elected by the parents.
ACS has been accredited since 1965 by MSA. A comprehensive curriculum
provides educational opportunities for college and non-college-bound
students. The International Baccalaureate diploma and a broad range
of Advanced Placement courses are available, as is an extensive
foreign language program. ACS is the College Board center for ACS
students.
Over 75% of teaching staff hold advanced degrees in their respective
fields (MA, PhD and additional graduate credits).
Approximately 100 students graduate from the high school each year,
with 100% continuing their education at colleges and universities
throughout the world. The student body is comprised of students
from 45 different countries with an average length of stay of five
years. Classes meet five days a week during four quarters between
the beginning of September and mid-June. Students are involved in
a wide range of cultural and social activities - a large after-school
activities program, tournaments, exchanges, field trips within Greece
and out-of-country trips.
ACS facilities are located in Halandri, seven miles north of Athens
and incorporate a Pre-K-5th Grade Elementary School; a 6th-8th Grade
Middle School, and a 9th-12th Grade High School. The campus is provided
with libraries as well as science, art, music, athletic facilities
and computer centers.
Students are admitted on the basis of transcripts, letters of recommendation
from previous schools and English proficiency. Also students must
meet government admissions criteria (please contact the school for
details).
