Founded in 1950, Pinewood is a co-educational English-language
day school, Pre-K-12, serving the educational needs of students
from 35 countries. Located in a pine grove in a suburb of Thessaloniki,
Greece's second largest city, the school's facilities include 26
classrooms, a large and well-stocked library, science labs, computer
room, music room, art room and combination gymnasium/auditorium.
The elementary curriculum includes computer and library classes
as well as music, physical education and Modern Greek. The secondary
curriculum is college preparatory, utilizing texts and materials
from the US and Europe. French and Modern Greek are offered as foreign
languages. Since September 1999, the school has been offering the
full IB Diploma Programme in grades 11 and 12. Over 75% of Pinewood's
graduates go on to higher education, many in the US and the UK.
Pinewood provides a variety of extracurricular activities including
drama, forensics, yearbook, computer, National Honor Society, and
Student Council. Among the sports offered are basketball, volleyball,
softball and soccer. Throughout the various grade levels emphasis
is placed on exposing students to the culture and history of the
host country, Greece. Modern Greek language courses, special assemblies
and projects, and field trips to archaeological sites are all supplemental
to Pinewood's academic program.
