Enka Okullari

Enka Schools offer a Pre-K to grade 9 education for some 950 mainly Turkish students at a purpose-built site in Istinye, which is situated on the European side of the Bosphorus. In a measured sequence, Enka is growing by one grade a year until September 2007 when Grade 12 will commence and so complete the High School section. Instruction is in Turkish with strong emphasis given to the acquisition of English in the Pre-school, Primary school and Middle School. In the High School English also becomes the language of instruction for the core subjects of mathematics and science.

A separate building accommodates the Pre-school years at Enka Okullari while the main facility houses Grades 1-5 in their home room bases and Grades 6-8, which are organized in a Middle School format. A dedicated High School extension to the current buildings will open in 2005. The school offers the Turkish National Curriculum which is organized according to Primary Years principles in PK-5 with 2005-6 as the targeted year for PYP recognition. Enka became a PYP candidate school in January 2004. A standards driven curriculum operates in Grades 6-8, while the school offers English assessment by the Cambridge Young Learners tests. A pilot introduction of the Cambridge Checkpoint Examinations for Grade 8 started in 2004. The school hopes to become a recognized center offering the IB Diploma as the basis of its Grade 11 & 12 programat Enka Okullari.

The 130-strong faculty at Enka Okullari are predominantly Turkish, with some 25 native English speaking teachers recruited from the United States, New Zealand, Canada, the UK and Australia. There is a strong professional development program in which all staff participate.

Staff and students at Enka Okullari have access to outstanding on-site cultural and sporting facilities, including a 400-seat auditorium, large indoor sports center, tennis center and fitness center, a 400-m tartan running track, 25-m indoor pool, and Olympic size outdoor competition pool.
