The Bangkok Patana School was established in 1957 to provide a British-system education for the children of expatriates living in Bangkok. In 1964 the school was registered under the sponsorship of the Department of Technical and Economic Co-operation of the Prime Minister's Office and is a not-for profit Foundation. In 1990 Bangkok Patana moved to its present 19½- acre site on the city's eastern edge in suburban surroundings. Patana is organized into Elementary (including Early Years and Primary) and Secondary Divisions, covering ages 2½ to 18 on one campus with an enrolment of approximately 2,000 students.

Bangkok Patana School has extensive, purpose-built facilities. These include three swimming pools, gymnasium, squash and tennis courts, playing fields, hall and auditorium, performing arts building, science and IT laboratories, technology suites and canteens and a recently developed Sports Center with eight additional tennis courts and three international size soccer pitches. Since 2000 the school has doubled its plant size.

The English National Curriculum forms the basis of the syllabuses in each Division though it is adapted to reflect the school’s international student body and the local environment. Secondary Division students are prepared for a full range of IGCSE or GCSE examination subjects at age 16. Students of age 16 and older prepare for the International Baccalaureate Diploma or Certificate. In the last four graduating years some 90% of all students have gained the IB Diploma and have been accepted by colleges and universities worldwide.

Students are of 54 nationalities with British, Australian and US children representing over 40% of the enrolment. All children are expected to be fluent English speakers or, if non-native speakers, to achieve fluency following a limited period of intensive ESL support. The teaching staff at Patana is fully qualified and represents some 16 nationalities. Approximately 75% of the staff are recruited overseas, principally in the UK.

The academic year follows the British pattern, with the year divided into three terms.

Bangkok Patana School is accredited by ECIS and NEASC, and is an overseas member of HMC.
